The Usual Suspects Boost Jobs in May
It’s June 1st…marking what feels like the start of summer, and for U.S. Department of Labor fans, the issuing of the monthly employment situation report! Ok, not calling yourself a fan yet? How about a concerned citizen? Either way, here are the numbers from May…
The upswing for jobs totaled 157,000 in May, with the service industries continuing to represent most of this growth. Payroll employment now stands at a lofty 137.8 million. The nation’s unemployment rate remained stagnant this past month at 4.5 percent, and the ratio of job holders to the total population failed to make any big moves, continuing to linger at 63.0 percent. Average hourly earnings were able to rise a bit (6 cents) since the end of April, signifying a 0.3 percent increase overall.
In the leisure/hospitality industry, employment in food services and drinking places rose by 35,000 jobs. This industry has added 361,000 positions since the beginning of January. Studying hospitality management is a great way to break into this job market ahead of the competition. Popular tourist locations would be an easy place to find a job, so why not receive your education there as well? Florida Metropolitan University in Pompano Beach currently offers a hospitality management program, as do many other schools in the area.
The health care sector enjoyed a healthy spike in jobs (25,000 to be exact) since last month, which helped to bring the YTD total for new jobs in this particular industry to 363,000. Ambulatory health care services and hospitals fueled most of these increases, and May is certainly not the last month when these types of occupations will experience expansion.
If you are interested in obtaining your degree in a health-care related field but need to plan your classes around a busy schedule, online colleges and universities are a convenient alternative to consider. You can even earn your degree at an accelerated pace if you are eager to take advantage of the opportunities in the current job market. For example, AIU has both bachelor and master degree programs in health care management, University of Phoenix offers several health administration and nursing programs, or you have the option of obtaining a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate in health administration from Warren National University.
Those are just a few of the schools that may interest you, but take a look at our full listings to browse colleges and universities in your area or online institutions that offer the programs that appeal to you.
Until next month, concerned citizens…
