Tech Jobs See Highest Growth Since 2001

Filed under: Job Market, Technology — Caroline @ 1:09 pm

A study done by the American Electronics Association, a tech industry group, was released in late September and revealed that job growth between January and June of 2006 demonstrates the strongest expansion in the field of technology of any six-month period since 2001. 140,000 new jobs were added, nearly double that of the 78,900 added in the first six months of 2005, to bring the current total to 5.81 million jobs.

The largest expansion was seen in the high-tech services sectors, which includes the fields of communication, software, and engineering and tech services. 107,000 net jobs were added during this period, the majority of which were engineering and tech services jobs at 49,800 new jobs, nearly matched by 44,500 net jobs in software services.

High-tech manufacturing rounded out the job growth, with 33,100 jobs. While this is a significantly smaller amount than the services sector, it still marks the second consecutive year that the manufacturing sector of this industry is witnessing net job growth.

Tech job growth still does not exemplify the ideal, but industry officials have hope. “The good news is that the U.S. high-tech industry is adding jobs for the second year in a row, and adding jobs across all tech sectors,” said William Archey, the president and CEO of American Electronics Association. “But job growth is by no means as strong as we believe it could be, and it continues to lag growth in the private sector as a whole. Strong tech growth benefits our economy because tech industry wages pay 85 percent more than the average private sector wage and support numerous other jobs.”
